Bottom Line, most sane people will agree that we don’t want cops to continue to kill innocent black people, and we can all agree that we love and support our veterans. We are not going to waste our time with how people want to bring attention to these issues, because that is not what matters.

Getting Rid of “Otherism”

Excerpt from Thich Nhat Hanh:

“Looking deeply means observing something or someone with so much concentration that the distinction between observer and the observed disappears. The result is insight into the heart of a flower, we see clouds, sunshine, minerals, time, the earth, and everything else in the cosmos in it. […] In fact, the flower is made entirely of non-flower elements; it has no independent, individual existence. It “inter-is” with everything else in the universe. Interbeing is a new term, but I believe it will be in the dictionary soon because it is such an important word. When we see the nature of interbeing, barriers between ourselves and others are dissolved, and peace, love, and understanding are possible. Whenever there is understanding, compassion is born.

Coming from a place of compassion and understanding, I can see the fear associated with black men taking a stand against oppression. I can imagine how being drenched in white privilege and supremacy one’s whole life can create a fearful and evil reaction to having that power taken away.  I can understand how some people don’t won’t to turn their back on veterans.

I can understand the pressure to be a warrior for human kind and stand up to pressure, when you also have personal goals to achieve. I can only imagine the pain that black mothers find themselves in when a cop murders their son and gets away with it. I can feel the anger that arises when a mentally ill leader is set on dividing this country.

But the bottom line is while gaining insight into all these viewpoints, what I realized is that our souls are the same whether we want to face it or not. I am interconnected with every Trump supporter (not gonna lie, that’s even hard to type for my ego) because are souls are infinitely intertwined.

Like all beings, I believe we are sun rays of God, and our world, environment, upbringing, identities, mental illness, and fears create the false perspective of other and difference.

Living in this worldly world though, where we can’t ignore difference just because our cores are the same, I propose a solution:

Let’s focus on what our SOULS can agree on

2

At our core spirit level, it is our nature to be compassionate and help others. We are social creatures and that’s how we have survived and evolved throughout time: COMRADERY!

Proverbs 26:4 says “Do not argue with a fool, or you yourself will be just like him.” The very next verse says, “Answer a fool , or he will be wise in his own eyes”. In my humble translation, I take this to mean, while we will not argue with fools, we will not sit idle and let them think their rhetoric is accurate. Let’s answer by coming together and doing the work that really matters.
